fast food available

The Perils of Fast Food Diets

There are some foods that we eat on a consistent basis even though we know that they are bad for us. A steady diet of fast food is an expressway route to the grave.
One of the biggest reasons why fast food kills is the fact that everyone, no matter what age or economic status, has access to fast food. There are few, if any, small towns in the United States that do not contain a fast food restaurant of some type, and everyone knows where to get fast food even if it's not right in their town. There is fast food in the malls, fast food at colleges and even at high schools in some parts of the country. As early as in elementary school, children are able to walk over to the nearest fast food restaurant - McDonald's, Burger King, Taco Bell - and order up a meal after school.
Another reason why fast food kills is the price. While accessing the food is extremely easy, paying for it might even be easier. Dollar menus, value menus and value meals mean that with five dollars, most people can purchase enough fast food in order to overfill themselves with fat, sodium and carbohydrates. Gallon sized cups of soda, available at many of the different restaurant chains, cost less than a dollar, and huge shakes are less than three. Cartons of fries, triple decker burgers and whirled ice cream treats all fall within this five dollar range as well, making stuffing yourself affordable.
Third - it tastes good. No matter how much you try to deny it, our bodies are programmed to think that sugary and salty snacks are delicious. We also enjoy fat, we even CRAVE it, although we might find the idea of eating so much fat repulsive. The smell of cooking French fries, the grilling burgers, the garlic pizza aroma and the nacho cheese - all of these things call to our bodies in ways we can't even identify. We just know we want it - and will enjoy these foods, even if we know it is wrong.
All of these reasons combined make up the explanation for why fast food kills. Combine access, with constant bombardment of commercials and ads touting the the delicious taste and smell of these foods, and make them cheap and quick... it's hard to say no. While some people manage to keep themselves and their children away from food that can be harmful, others can not afford to not take advantage of the cheap rates on food at fast food restaurants.
The only way we can stop the fast food from causing as much damage as it does is by stopping the bombardment of commercials, and making fresh, healthy food available that costs less than it does right now.

Fast Food No Nos

Ok, let's face it; we all eat fast food at one time or another during the month. Some more than others, but most everyone eats fast food at least once a month. If you don't eat fast food it has to be a full blown boycott on it, because the fast food companies make it so convenient to eat. It seems like everywhere we go fast food chains are offering fresh, hot, tasty food for the price of a few dollars, or less. It is not easy to stay slim eating fast food unless you have a movie star metabolism, however it is possible to limit the damage the food does to you by making smart selections when you choose to indulge your hunger with fast food.

One great way to make smart choices on where to eat, and what to get, is to do a little homework. You don't need to be a nutritionist to discover that one fast food chain has double the sodium in their French fries then the competition's French fry sodium levels. Just doing research like this can literally cut your sodium intake in half for the day. You can take the sodium example, and apply it to calories, cholesterol, and any other ingredient that you prefer. Most fast food chains offer nutritional charts on their websites that will help guide you to this pertinent information.

If time does not allot for a sit down with the nutritional menu at your favorite fast food restaurant, then go with this general rule of thumb: less is more. If you have less food at a fast food restaurant, you will have more health benefits for it. If you eat larger quantities of food you will definitely be worse off then if you'd just had half of what you ordered.

Also, take advantage of the new lower calorie choices which most all of the fast food restaurants are now offering. Most of them have some form of salad with a lite or reduced calorie salad dressing available. Many of them also have other choices such as fruit cups or baked potatoes (watch out for the butter and sour cream) which can be substituted for French fries.

Many of the fast food restaurants are now offering grilled chicken where they only had fried chicken in the past. By choosing grilled instead of fried, you can still get a fast food sandwich with most of the trimmings (you may want to leave off the mayonnaise or heavy sauce) and still stay in the healthy zone.

Another idea is to get your sandwich and when it comes, don't eat the bread or bun. You might want to do this especially if the bread has been smeared with a lot of mayonnaise or has had butter spread on it and "toasted". Both of these have probably trippled the calorie value of the bread.

And...a really big one is even though the fast food restaurant advertises and the clerk does his or her best to push you, don't "super size" your meal. It may seem like a better value, but in the long run while you may be paying less money for your food, you are paying a much greater price with your health. More of a good thing is good, but more of a bad thing is just bad!

Here's one more hint which will help you eat healthier when buying your food at a fast food restaurant. That's not eating in your car. I know, I'm guilty of it myself and I know I shouldn't do it. But sometimes I'm just in a hurry and don't have time to either go into the restaurant and sit and eat or take it back to my office or home.

It seems that when I eat in my car, it is easier just to eat whatever I ordered as fast as I can so I can be on my way. Heck, sometimes I eat while I'm driving. It's just not good practice to do this. Because you are in a cramped area as well as being pressed for time, you can spill some of the food or beverage on yourself. Also, it's hard to just eat the meat and veggies out of your sandwich and trying to balance a baked potato is really ridiculous. So what do you do...you know, you opt for the high calorie, high sodium, high fat meal and eat it as quickly as possible and hightail it out of there.

I'm sure you've heard most of these lessons before, but the older you get the more problems you have and the more important it is to heed these suggestions. Using your mind, and activating some deep down restraint will help you intake less toxic food, and stay healthy so you can live for a long time to come.

Are You 1 Cheeseburger Away From Being Obese?

I walk the streets of Chicago every day and see people eating fat food everywhere. Let's face it we just want to fill our bellies with good tasting satisfying foods. We eat food that is really not food at all but fatty foods full of "heart attack on a plate" so called nutrition.

Still people do it all day long every day of the year. Then you get sick and stay at home. We'll you stay and home and eat all kinds of processed and fatty foods.

I ate all these foods myself because I was nervous, and simply craving something else more positive in my life. I didn't get what I really craved for so I turned to food, pop, bear, pizza.

We all do this all the time. We use food as a crutch for something else missing in our lives. Silly thing, but its true... admit it. I have a friend who was up and down. He starved himself to keep his weight down. And it worked until he went home and started eating everything in sight but the kitchen sink. Admit it; you probably do the same thing. Fast, then "Chow Down".

Another thing I see all the time is in spring and early summer fat people in jogging suits trying to walk or run to try and lose weight. You've probably done this one or more times. Does it work? Hell NO! You go home and start drinking beer and eat your favorite pizza.

Nobody trusts diets anymore because most of them are hype and some even increase the risk for such serious health problems such as kidney and liver disorders, gout, coronary heat disease, diabetes, stoke and several types of cancer.

Today, 160,000 fast-food restaurants serve more than 50 million Americans daily. These businesses generate sales in excess of $65 billion annually.

Go see the movie "Super-Size Me". This is an eye opening glimpse of a man who ate nothing but McDonald's food for a month. It reveals the truth why Americans are so fat? This movie Super Size Me is a tongue in-cheek - 1 Cheeseburger Away From Being Fat -- look at the legal, financial and physical costs of America's hunger for fast food. "Super Size Me" focuses on its gimmick of Spurlock's diet, which is admittedly very compelling stuff and entertaining. Although it may seem like Spurlock doesn't offer solutions, the audience can figure them out on their own - we need to be more aware of what we're eating, make better food choices and eat reduced portions (if you're going to eat it, share it.) People can eat some fast food on occasion (I like pizza and fried rice here-and-there), but it can't become the majority of one's diet.

Don't worry... you know your fat but don't really care; I know I was there once too!

Weight Loss & Eating Fast Foods - F-A-S-T - 4 Simple Secrets to Keep You on Track

Here the 4 Secrets of Fast Foods: Eating "On-The-Go" & Not Gaining Weight. The success of a weight loss plan is to accept that, by circumstance of time, location, or even money, one might end up in a fast food restaurant or having to eat while driving in their car. Just because one has to eat "on-the- go" does not mean your weight loss has to be disrupted. The secret is like eating anywhere is to have a plan. In this case it's easier to remember what you should not have rather than the best choices. Here is the short list of what you should try to avoid: It's as simple as can be, and if you examine it closely it really works. I use a simple acronym: F.A.S.T. to point to the really bad drinks and foods.
The Perfect World:
Ideally, everybody has the "right breakfast" at home, does away with eating at fast food restaurants, picks lower calorie alternatives at the office or at the school cafeteria for lunch, has a high-protein, low-carb snack in the late afternoon and then comes home at the end of the day for a nutritious, healthy dinner including fish, vegetables and salad. That is the perfect world.
50% of All Food is Fast Food Types:
Unfortunately, let's face it, the perfect world never happens in the lives of the majority of Americans. The NPD Group®, an organization that estimates food trends in the United States, reported in 2002 that more than 50% of all food consumed (not just restaurant foods) consisted of burgers, fries, Mexican food and pizza.
Why Fast Foods?
Consumers go to the drive thru at McDonald's®, Burger King® or Taco Bell® and pick up burgers, chicken nuggets and fries without even thinking about the consequences. These foods taste good, are cheap, satisfying and, most importantly, are convenient-they fit into our busy life styles. Unfortunately, gaining weight is easy even when you only eat small amounts of these high-calorie, fattening foods, especially foods with portions that are difficult to control.
Fast Foods Give Pleasure:
The reality is that, more often than not, these foods represent a main source of a lot of pleasure for many people. Depriving yourself of what you like only leads to wanting it more. Sooner or later, the "I can't have it" becomes "I must have it" and creates anxiety. The SECRET is to learn how to choose smartly from the vast selection available.
4 Secrets to FAST Food Eating: F.A.S.T.
When you find yourself forced to eat on the go, the secret is to choose foods that will not add thousands of calories to your diet. From all of the choices that surround you, here is a short list of what you should try to avoid.
Just remember the word, "FAST."
  • F=no fried foods
  • A= No add on's-sauces, high cal dressings, dips, mayo, all "special sauces"
  • S= skip breakfast, skip sugary drinks
  • T= "thick"--no burgers, sandwiches that have double & triple layers, remember most of these have been eliminated because they are fried.
The easiest way to navigate the 200 or more items is not what's good, but what's bad. Here is how F.A.S. T. eliminates all of the high calorie, high carb foods:
F: No Fried Foods for Lunch and Dinner at Fast Food Restaurants:
You really only need to avoid a small number of items among the two hundred or more food choices we are exposed to everyday. Going to fast food restaurants and finding reasonable, low-calorie, portion-controlled foods is absolutely possible.
fried foods: this eliminates all burgers, fried chicken, fried fish, French Fries, onion nuggets
A: Add-On's:
This means all of the sauces, including Mayo, many of the proprietary sauces, bad salad dressings, croutons,- this can save you hundreds of calories.
Low cal salad dressings, mustard and ketchup are great
S: Skip: Skip Breakfast:
Breakfast is the easiest meal to adjust because what we choose to eat in the morning is not as much about satisfying cravings or wanting comfort food. Many people will pick up the first thing they see, such as a Pop Tart®, a bagel, pastry, a donut or a muffin. In fact, we would be just as satisfied with foods that have much lower calories. Fast food breakfasts can easily account for a third to half of the total daily calories for a person on a diet. Often, people in a rush get their breakfast at a drive Thur gobble down their food in their cars and often do not even realize what they are eating! --SKIP BREAKFAST IN THESE RESTAURANTS
S: Skip: Skip sugary drinks:
Forget the juices, fruit punches, whole milk, high calorie lattes, and mostly the regular soft drinks There are numerous zero calorie drinks, try water, diet soft drinks, no fat milk
T: Thick(double stacked, multiple ingredients)
If the fried food exclusion did not get you, this will. This eliminates all foods with multiple more than one meat or chicken patty, combinations of meat-bacon and other almost crazy ideas. Vegetables like lettuce and tomatoes on great, we are talking about adding extra proteins and carbs to the sandwiches.
What Can You Eat: Here are the foods that past the F.A. S. T. "test":
McDonald's: hamburgers(single), cheese burgers, grilled chicken, wrap snacks, apple dippers, all salads, side salads, watch-no creamy dressings,
Burger King: hamburger, cheese burger, chicken sandwich-grilled, BK Burger Shots(kids and adults), salads, again watch dressing and add-on's
Wendy's: Junior hamburger or cheese burger, grilled chicken, Classic single, chili(large or small), baked potato.(sour cream and chives as 80 calories), all salads-watch the add-on's and dressings,
Subway: most subs, nothing fried, no mayo, watch sauces, avoid meatball, Philly cheesesteak, chicken and bacon ranch, BMT, Italian spicy, Feast, Chicken Teryaki
It's that simple, you can go to these places when you need to you just need to be a little careful with what you chose.
Just remember: FAST-fried-skip-skip-ad-ons-thick & stacked

Staying Away From High Calorie Foods at Fast Food Restaurants

This is quite a challenge, but it is possible! You can enjoy your fast food but watch your intake of calories.
The most important "bad" calories are the fat calories.
There are good fats and there are less good fats. Some are even evil fats that have to be avoided in any case.
How do you know which ones are good for you?
You may know that heated fats are no good in general. They create materials that develop bad linings in your blood vessels.
These linings are called cholesterol.
There are also two types of cholesterol. One is the good type and one is the dangerous type. Obviously heated fat does not create good cholesterol. It creates the one you should avoid.
To speak about fast food and calorie rich foods can mean the same thing. There are, nowadays, many fast foods that try to provide you with a healthy meal thus avoiding bad calories.
They will serve you a fresh salad (that is quickly prepared and contains fiber rich raw vegetables and salads, some salt, maybe pepper and oil.) It can be a seed oil, like sunflower oil that is also very healthy. Do not eat mayonnaise. You never know what it contains.
The bread used in most fast food chains does give you only empty calories. If you can avoid eating it, do it. Just eat the hamburger and the salad. If you absolutely need some bread, buy it at a baker's shop or in a supermarket where you can find other types of bread, possibly brown ones that contain whole grain flour. You can have a milk shake. Milk contains fat but most shakes are made of less fatty milk that give you only a few calories. You should stay away from milkshakes that contain artificial colors or flavors. If they contain fruit, it is fine. Fruit is almost never calorie rich and their calories are healthy and few.
The worst thing to eat in a fast food but also the most served are French fries. They can really do you a lot of harm. They are fried in continuously hot fat or oil that is overheated and produces therefore substances that become dangerous as they contribute to the creation of cancer.
Hence, if you cannot avoid to eat in a fast food, be aware of what to stay away from: French fries. Eat tapas instead. They do not have a great amount of calories and fat but still contain some grain.
Eat the hamburger without the cheese that is pure fat and mostly not of good quality.
There is a certain choice in every fast food chain. Choose wisely, now that you know which foods you have to avoid. Whenever you can add some fresh fruit, do it. It helps to lower the impact of fat and heavy calories.

If You Want to Stop Eating Fast Food Then This is the Way

In order to stop eating fast foods we need to stop listening and advocating the allegations that these are bad foods. You can find lots of opinion from friends, families, nutritionists and many others about fast foods being such bad foods and one should stop from consuming them.
To the one saying that looks like an effective method but in reality what it does is the opposite of what intended. The Fast food industry keeps on profiting even in times of bad economy
Instead the focus should be on what works. Most people who consume fast foods, do so because of the lazy feeling in cooking. The experience of having to prepare your own food seems like a lot of hard work and expensive as compared to a fast food.
The main reasons people do choose fast foods are:
i/It is fast
ii/It is convenient
iii/It is easy to get
So the primary focus to stop eating fast food is to focus on how to make healthy foods fast, convenient and easy at the comfort of one's home.
With that said, here are simple ideas on how to go about it:
i/The ten-minute lazy person's Chinese stir fry:
This type of meal takes 10 minutes or less with a rice cooker at hand. It consists of Brown rice, Frozen oriental vegetables, Chicken breast and Sodium Soy sauce
ii/Two-minute black beans and spicy salsa.
This takes only two minutes to make, no cooking required. It consists of Black beans, 1 table spoonful virgin olive oil, medium or hot salsa, 2 cloves garlic and salt and pepper for better taste.
iii/Three-minute Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal
This is easier, cheaper and fast to prepare. It mainly consists of Natural oatmeal, natural applesauce, cinnamon and with the addition of eggs.
Also you should consider this:
