9/9/1890 Harland Sanders is born just outside Henryville, Indiana. 1900-1924 Harland Sanders holds a variety of jobs including: farm hand, streetcar conductor, army private in Cuba, blacksmith's helper, railyard fireman, insurance salesman, tire salesman and service station operator for Standard Oil. 1930 In the midst of the depression, Harland Sanders opens his first restaurant in the small front room of a gas station in Corbin, Kentucky. Sanders serves as station operator, chief cook and cashier and names the dining area "Sanders Court & Café." 1936 Kentucky Governor Ruby Laffoon makes Harland Sanders an honorary Kentucky Colonel in recognition of his contributions to the state's cuisine. 1937 The Sanders Court & Café adds a motel and expands the restaurant to 142 seats. 1939 The Sanders Court & Café is first listed in Duncan Hines' "Adventures in Good Eating." Fire destroys The Sanders Court & Café, but it is rebuilt and reopened. The pressure cooker is introduced. Soon thereafter Colonel Sanders begins using it to fry his chicken to give customers fresh chicken, faster. 1940 Birthdate of the Original Recipe 1949 Sanders marries Claudia Price. 1952 The Colonel begins actively franchising his chicken business by traveling from town to town and cooking batches of chicken for restaurant owners and employees. The Colonel awards Pete Harman of Salt Lake City with the first KFC franchise. A handshake agreement stipulates a payment of a nickel to Sanders for each chicken sold. 1955 An interstate highway is built to bypass Corbin, Kentucky. Sanders sells the service station on the same day that he receives his first social security check for $105. After paying debts owed, he is virtually broke. Cinnamon Raisin French Toast
Our Cinnamon Raisin bread makes fabulous French toast.
8 | slices 1/2" thick Panera® Cinnamon Raisin Bread |
4 T. | melted butter |
3/4 c | milk |
1/2 c | heavy cream |
3 | large eggs |
1 T. | honey |
1/2 tsp. | vanilla extract |
1/2 tsp. | salt |
- For the French Toast custard, combine using a hand whisk the milk, heavy cream, eggs, honey, vanilla extract and the salt. This custard can be made well in advance. Give a brisk stir before making the toast.
- Transfer the custard to a casserole or open shallow dish for dipping.
- Dip one slice into the custard and turn over after about 15 seconds. Transfer the slice to a plate while dipping another slice into the custard.
- Place a large skillet on a medium fire. Allow the pan to heat thoroughly before pouring 1 Tablespoon of the melted butter into the pan.
- Place both slices carefully into the skillet and cook on each side until golden brown or about 2 minutes.
- Repeat steps 3�5 until all the French toast is cooked.
- An optional step is to place each finished French toast onto a baking sheet in a preheated oven until all are ready to serve.
Serve warm with real maple syrup. Serves 4.

Bread Pudding with Apples, Pecans and Raisins
Delight guests with this fruity bread pudding made with our signature Cinnamon Raisin bread.
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter1 loaf Cinnamon Raisin White Bread torn into bite-size pieces
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup pecan halves
Zest and juice of 1 large orange
1/4 cup apple cider
1 tablespoon vanilla extract or rum
8 small baking apples (about 2 pounds) such as Fuji, Gala or Granny Smith, peeled, cored and thinly sliced
1/2 cup apple, quince, or blackberry jam or jelly
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
- Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
- Add the bread and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, or until well coated.
- Add the sugar, pecans, orange zest and juice, cider, and vanilla extract.
- Cook an additional 2 to 3 minutes until a sauce begins to form.
- In a 9 x 13-inch baking dish, layer the bread mixture with the apples and dot the top with the jam or jelly.
- Bake 30 to 40 minutes, or until bubbly.

In Wichita, brothers Frank and Dan Carney opened the first Pizza Hut restaurant on June 15, 1958. They had been approached by the owner of a small building who wanted a nice neighbourhood business, and had read the Post's article about pizza. The Carneys borrowed $600 from their mother, located John Bender, an airman from McConnell Air Force Base who had worked as a pizza cook, purchased some secondhand equipment and were ready for business. The first night, they gave away pizza to interest potential customers.
Many people ask how Pizza Hut got its name. When the Carneys were setting up that first restaurant, the building has a sign with room for just nine characters. They wanted to use "pizza" in the name, which left room for a word with only three characters. A family member suggested the building looked like a hut....and Pizza Hut was born.
1959 : Pizza Hut is incorporated and the first franchise unit opens in Topeka, Kansas.
1965 : "Putt-Putt to Pizza Hut" musical jingle is developed for Pizza Hut's first television commercial.
1967 : A Pizza Hut restaurant was built in five days by franchisees at the Oklahoma State Fair. World's largest pizza (six feet in diameter) is baked and served at the grand opening of the Fort Worth, Texas Pizza Hut.
1968 : International market entered with the opening of the first Pizza Hut in Surrey, B.C., Canada. Pizza Hut serves a million people a week at its 310 locations.
1977 : Super Supreme is introduced. Pizza Hut opens its 3,000th unit in Arlington, Texas.
1980 : Pan Pizza is introduced throughout the system.
1983 : Personal Pan Pizza, with a five-minute guarantee, is introduced. Pizza Hut serves one and a half million pounds of pasta annually. Pizza Hut employs 10,000 teenagers from 16 to 19 years of age.
1984 : BOOK IT! National reading incentive program is launched with 200,00 elementary students enrolled.
1988 : Hand Tossed Traditional Pizza is introduced. Pizza Hut celebrates its 30th anniversary with a total of more than 6,000 restaurants and delivery units worldwide.
1990 : Pizza Hut delivers more than 1,349,000 pizzas on Superbowl Sunday, about 7,000 pies per minute.
1995 : Pizza Hut launches the "You'll Love The Stuff We're Made Of" campaign. Buffalo Wings soar onto the menu. Pizzeria Stuffed Crust Pizza is introduced which immediately sets company sales records.
1998 : Surrey Place Pizza Hut celebrates its 30th year of business!

Over 6,500 children are treated to a finger lickin' good food every year. This year marks the 10th Anniversary of Projek Penyayang.
This in turn, was followed by Tabung Penyayang KFC, a charitable fund, whose sole purpose was to help orphanages in Malaysia. Tabung Penyayang was founded in 1997, to help children and the needy through various CSR programme. Tabung Penyayang KFC is a unique fund as it represents a percentage of revenue generated from the sale of KFC's Kids' Fun Meals.
In August 1999, KFC introduced its 'Tabung Penyayang' KFC Collection Box as an extension to the Tabung Penyayang KFC Programme. Collection boxes are placed at all KFC restaurants enabling customers to contribute and be apart of this charitable effort.
Today, 3 of KFC Restaurants are run by speech and hearing-impaired staffs that was designed to serve physically challenged individuals. They serve to dispel the myth that a disability impede a person from leading a normal life and gives them a sense of confidence and self-esteem.
These 3 restaurants are located in Peninsular and East Malaysia. First is at Sentul Raya, in Kuala Lumpur, second is at Saujana, in Sarawak and the third is at Tanjung Aru, Sabah.
